Understanding Addiction: It’s a Disease, Not a Choice
Before we dive into treatment options, let’s address something important: Addiction is a chronic medical condition that changes your brain’s reward, motivation, and memory systems. It’s not a moral failing or a lack of willpower—it’s a disease that requires professional treatment, just like diabetes or heart disease.
The brain changes caused by repeated substance use make it incredibly difficult to quit on your own, even when you desperately want to stop. This is why evidence-based medical treatment is so effective—it addresses these biological changes while helping you rebuild your life.
Common Signs of Addiction
You might be struggling with addiction if you experience:
- Intense cravings that feel overwhelming and impossible to ignore
- Loss of control over substance use despite a genuine desire to quit
- Continued use even when it’s causing problems in relationships, work, or health
- Tolerance—needing more of the substance to achieve the same effect
- Withdrawal symptoms when trying to stop (anxiety, sweating, shaking, nausea, or worse)
- Neglecting responsibilities and activities you once enjoyed
- Spending excessive time obtaining, using, or recovering from substance use
- Failed attempts to cut down or quit on your own
If these signs sound familiar, you’re in the right place. Vigeo Wellness specializes in helping people break free from addiction using comprehensive, evidence-based approaches.
Vigeo Wellness’s Approach to Addiction Treatment
At Vigeo Wellness, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all recovery. Your addiction is as unique as you are, shaped by your genetics, life experiences, mental health, and circumstances. That’s why we offer multiple treatment options that can be combined and customized to give you the best chance at lasting recovery.
Our Treatment Philosophy
Treat the whole person, not just the addiction. Most people struggling with substance use also battle depression, anxiety, trauma, or chronic pain. We address all of these conditions simultaneously because treating one without the others rarely leads to lasting recovery.
Use multiple approaches together. Research shows that combining medication with therapy and psychiatric support produces better outcomes than any single treatment alone. We integrate FDA-approved medications, innovative therapies, and comprehensive mental health care under one roof.
Meet you where you are. Whether you’re ready to quit completely, need help reducing your use, or are taking your first tentative step toward recovery, we’ll work with you at your pace. No judgment. No shame. Just compassionate, expert care.
Support long-term recovery. Addiction is a chronic condition, which means effective treatment often continues for months or years. We’re here for the long haul, adjusting your treatment plan as your needs evolve.
Treatment Options Available at Vigeo Wellness
We offer three main categories of addiction treatment, each backed by extensive research and clinical evidence:
1. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
The gold standard for treating opioid and alcohol use disorders, combining FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral support.
Available medications:
- Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone) for opioid addiction
- Vivitrol (extended-release naltrexone) for alcohol and opioid addiction
- Coordination with methadone programs when appropriate
→ Learn more about our MAT services
2. Ketamine-Assisted Therapy
An innovative approach that’s showing remarkable results for addiction, especially when traditional treatments haven’t worked. Ketamine rapidly reduces cravings while treating co-occurring depression, anxiety, and trauma.

3. Comprehensive Psychiatric Care
Because addiction rarely exists in isolation, we provide full psychiatric evaluation and treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and chronic pain.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT): The Gold Standard for Opioid and Alcohol Addiction
If you’ve been researching addiction treatment, you’ve probably encountered the term “Medication-Assisted Treatment” or MAT. Here’s what you need to know: MAT is the most effective approach we have for treating opioid and alcohol use disorders, and it’s backed by decades of research.
What Is MAT?
Medication-Assisted Treatment combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies to treat substance use disorders. These medications work by:
- Reducing cravings so you can focus on recovery instead of constantly fighting the urge to use
- Preventing withdrawal symptoms that make quitting nearly impossible
- Blocking the euphoric effects of opioids, removing the reward for using
- Normalizing brain chemistry that’s been disrupted by chronic substance use
Important: MAT is not “trading one addiction for another.” These medications are carefully prescribed, medically supervised, and allow you to function normally in daily life while you work on recovery.
Why MAT Works
Research consistently shows that MAT:
- Reduces the risk of fatal overdose by approximately 50%
- Improves treatment retention rates
- Helps people return to work, school, and family life
- Reduces illegal activity and infectious disease transmission
- Supports long-term recovery when maintained appropriately
At Vigeo Wellness, we offer two primary MAT options, and we’ll help you determine which is right for your situation.
Suboxone Treatment at Vigeo Wellness
Suboxone is one of the most effective treatments for opioid addiction, and it’s widely available through our Fort Worth and Weatherford locations. If you’re struggling with addiction to heroin, fentanyl, oxycodone, hydrocodone, or other opioids, Suboxone could be your path to freedom.
What Is Suboxone?
Suboxone is a combination medication containing:
- Buprenorphine – A partial opioid agonist that reduces cravings and withdrawal
- Naloxone – An opioid blocker that prevents misuse
Unlike full opioids, Suboxone has a “ceiling effect,” meaning it’s much safer and has significantly lower overdose risk. It allows you to stabilize physically while you work on the psychological and behavioral aspects of recovery.
How Suboxone Treatment Works at Vigeo
Step 1: Initial Consultation
You’ll meet with our psychiatric team for a comprehensive evaluation. We’ll discuss your opioid use history, previous treatment attempts, current health status, co-occurring mental health conditions, and your treatment goals.
Step 2: Induction Phase
You must be in mild withdrawal before starting Suboxone (typically 12-24 hours after your last opioid use). This is a safety measure to prevent precipitated withdrawal. We’ll guide you through this process carefully and start your medication at the appropriate dose.
Step 3: Stabilization
Over the next few days to weeks, we’ll adjust your Suboxone dose until you’re comfortable, cravings are controlled, and withdrawal symptoms are minimal. Most people find their optimal dose within the first week or two.
Step 4: Maintenance
You’ll continue on a stable Suboxone dose while working with therapists, rebuilding your life, and addressing underlying issues. Regular appointments with our psychiatric team ensure your treatment stays on track.
Step 5: Tapering (When You’re Ready)
When you’ve established solid recovery foundations—which might be months or years later—we can slowly reduce your dose under medical supervision if that’s your goal. There’s no rush, and many people benefit from long-term maintenance.
Benefits of Suboxone Treatment at Vigeo
✓ Outpatient treatment – No daily clinic visits required; prescriptions can be filled at your pharmacy
✓ Board-certified psychiatric care – Dr. Schneider’s 15 years of addiction medicine expertise
✓ Comprehensive approach – We treat co-occurring depression, anxiety, trauma, and other conditions
✓ Flexible dosing – Treatment plans tailored to your individual needs
✓ Long-term support – We’re here as long as you need us
✓ Judgment-free environment – You’ll be treated with dignity and respect, always
Real-world impact: Suboxone allows people to function normally at work and home, maintain relationships, and focus on rebuilding their lives rather than constantly fighting cravings and withdrawal.

Vivitrol Treatment: Monthly Injection Option for Alcohol and Opioid Addiction
If you’re looking for a non-daily medication option, Vivitrol might be the perfect fit. This once-monthly injection offers unique advantages for people with alcohol use disorder or those who’ve completed opioid detox.
What Is Vivitrol?
Vivitrol is an extended-release injectable form of naltrexone, an opioid antagonist (blocker) that’s FDA-approved for both alcohol and opioid use disorders. Unlike Suboxone, Vivitrol contains no opioids—it simply blocks opioid receptors in the brain.
How Vivitrol Works
For Alcohol Addiction:
Naltrexone reduces the pleasurable effects of drinking and decreases alcohol cravings. It works by blocking endogenous opioids (your body’s natural “feel-good” chemicals) that are released when you drink, making alcohol less rewarding and easier to resist.
Research shows Vivitrol:
- Reduces heavy drinking days by 25-30%
- Increases likelihood of abstinence
- Helps prevent relapse after periods of sobriety
For Opioid Addiction:
Vivitrol blocks the effects of opioids at the receptor level. If someone taking Vivitrol uses heroin or other opioids, they won’t feel the euphoric high. This removes the reinforcing effects of opioid use and helps reduce cravings over time.
The Vivitrol Treatment Process at Vigeo
Important Requirement: You must be completely free of all opioids for 7-14 days before starting Vivitrol to avoid severe precipitated withdrawal. This means completing detox first.
Step 1: Initial Consultation
We’ll evaluate whether Vivitrol is appropriate for your situation, assess your readiness, and coordinate detox support if needed.
Step 2: First Injection
Once you’re opioid-free for the required period, you’ll come to our clinic for your first Vivitrol injection. The shot is administered in the gluteal muscle and lasts 30 days.
Step 3: Monthly Follow-Ups
You’ll return each month for your next injection and check in with our psychiatric team about your progress, challenges, and any adjustments needed to your overall treatment plan.
Step 4: Comprehensive Support
Between injections, you’ll work with therapists, attend support groups, and receive ongoing psychiatric care for any co-occurring conditions.
Why Choose Vivitrol at Vigeo Wellness?
✓ No daily medication to remember – One injection lasts a full month
✓ Guaranteed compliance – Once injected, the medication is working for 30 days
✓ No abuse potential – Cannot be diverted or misused
✓ Dual purpose – Effective for both alcohol and opioid use disorder
✓ Comprehensive psychiatric support – Not just injections; full mental health care
✓ Coordination with therapy – We connect you with counseling partners
Who benefits most from Vivitrol? People who’ve completed opioid detox and are motivated to remain abstinent, individuals with alcohol use disorder seeking to reduce drinking or maintain abstinence, those who prefer a non-opioid medication option, and anyone who wants the convenience of monthly treatment instead of daily pills.

Ketamine-Assisted Therapy: Innovative Treatment for Addiction
Here’s something that might surprise you: One of the most promising advances in addiction treatment comes from a medication that’s been used safely in hospitals for over 50 years. Ketamine therapy is emerging as a powerful tool for treating substance use disorders, especially when traditional approaches haven’t worked.
At Vigeo Wellness, we’re at the forefront of this innovative treatment, combining our extensive ketamine expertise with Dr. Schneider’s addiction medicine specialization to offer something truly unique in the Fort Worth area.
Why Ketamine Works for Addiction
Unlike traditional medications that target opioid receptors, ketamine works through an entirely different mechanism—affecting glutamate, your brain’s primary learning and memory neurotransmitter. This unique approach creates several powerful effects:
- Rapid Reduction of Cravings
Many patients experience significant decreases in cravings within hours of their first ketamine treatment, providing immediate relief during the critical early stages of recovery. - Enhanced Neuroplasticity
Ketamine promotes rapid neuroplasticity—your brain’s ability to form new neural connections. This helps “rewire” addiction-related pathways and makes it easier to establish new, healthier patterns of thinking and behavior. - Treatment of Co-Occurring Conditions
Up to 70% of people with substance use disorders also struggle with depression, anxiety, or PTSD. Ketamine treats both conditions simultaneously, addressing root causes of substance use rather than just symptoms. - Disruption of Drug-Related Memories
Research suggests ketamine may help disrupt the reconsolidation of drug-related memories, making triggers less powerful and reducing the automatic urge to use. - Enhanced Therapy Effectiveness
The unique mental state during ketamine treatment creates a “window of plasticity” where therapy can be more effective, insights come more easily, and new perspectives on addiction can emerge.
What the Research Shows
Ketamine therapy for addiction isn’t just theoretical—it’s backed by growing clinical evidence:
- Alcohol use disorder: Studies show ketamine can prolong abstinence from alcohol for up to two years when combined with therapy
- Opioid addiction: Research demonstrates reduced cravings and improved abstinence rates when ketamine is added to comprehensive treatment
- Cocaine addiction: Clinical trials show decreased cocaine cravings and use
- Cannabis use disorder: Emerging research suggests reduced consumption and increased confidence in maintaining abstinence
The research is particularly compelling when ketamine is paired with comprehensive addiction treatment and psychotherapy—exactly what we offer at Vigeo Wellness.
Ketamine Treatment Options at Vigeo
We offer two approaches to ketamine therapy for addiction:
Standard Ketamine Infusion Therapy
IV infusions administered in private, comfortable treatment rooms with continuous medical monitoring by our board-certified anesthesia providers. Each session lasts about 60 minutes, and you’ll relax in a spa-like environment designed to promote healing.
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)
Our most comprehensive option combines ketamine infusions with specialized therapy sessions led by Cameron Schober, LPC-S, LMFT-S. This intensive approach helps you process trauma, gain insights, and develop coping strategies during the unique ketamine state when your brain is most receptive to therapeutic work.
Your Ketamine Treatment Journey
Initial Consultation
Meet with Dr. Schneider to discuss your addiction history, treatment goals, and whether ketamine therapy is appropriate for you. We’ll create a personalized treatment plan.
Treatment Phase
Typically begins with 6 infusions over 2-3 weeks. During each session, you’ll be in a private room, monitored by our expert medical team, and supported in a calm, safe environment.
Integration Therapy
Between and after infusions, you’ll work with therapists to process insights, develop coping strategies, and solidify the changes ketamine helps initiate.
Maintenance & Boosters
Many people benefit from periodic booster treatments (monthly or less frequently) to maintain results. We’ll develop a long-term plan that works for you.
Ongoing Psychiatric Support
Dr. Schneider continues your psychiatric care, manages any medications, treats co-occurring conditions, and coordinates with your overall recovery program.
Is Ketamine Therapy Safe for People with Addiction?
This is one of the most common questions we hear, and it’s important to address directly: Yes, ketamine therapy administered in a controlled clinical setting by medical professionals is safe for people with addiction.
Research shows that therapeutic ketamine administered for addiction treatment does not lead to ketamine use disorder when:
- It’s given in a medical setting
- Doses are controlled and supervised
- Treatment is part of a comprehensive recovery program
- Patients are monitored for any problematic patterns
At Vigeo Wellness, we closely monitor all patients and screen for any signs of concerning use patterns. Our medical team has extensive experience with ketamine safety protocols.
Why Choose Vigeo for Ketamine Addiction Treatment?
✓ Board-certified anesthesia providers – Over 10 years of ketamine expertise
✓ Board-certified addiction psychiatrist – Dr. Schneider’s specialized training
✓ Integrated psychiatric care – We treat your whole mental health, not just addiction
✓ Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy – Work with Cameron Schober, LPC-S, LMFT-S
✓ Comprehensive approach – Ketamine combined with MAT, therapy, and psychiatric support
✓ Spa-like environment – Private treatment rooms designed for healing
✓ Evidence-based protocols – We follow the latest research and best practices
Ketamine therapy isn’t right for everyone, but it can be life-changing for people who haven’t found success with traditional treatments or who need rapid relief from cravings and co-occurring depression.

Treating the Whole Person: Comprehensive Psychiatric Care
Here’s a truth that traditional addiction treatment often misses: Most people struggling with substance use disorders are also battling depression, anxiety, trauma, chronic pain, or other mental health conditions. In fact, up to 70% of people with addiction have what’s called a “co-occurring disorder” or “dual diagnosis.”
This is why Vigeo Wellness is uniquely positioned to help. We’re not just an addiction clinic—we’re a full-service psychiatric practice with expertise in treating the complex interplay between substance use and mental health.
Common Co-Occurring Conditions We Treat
Depression + Substance Use
Many people use alcohol or drugs to temporarily escape feelings of hopelessness, emptiness, or despair. The substance provides brief relief, but ultimately makes depression worse—creating a vicious cycle.
Anxiety Disorders + Addiction
Whether it’s generalized anxiety, panic disorder, or social anxiety, the discomfort can be overwhelming. Substances offer temporary calm but increase anxiety over time and make it harder to develop healthy coping skills.
PTSD and Trauma + Substance Use
Traumatic experiences—childhood abuse, combat, assault, accidents—can leave lasting psychological wounds. Many people with PTSD self-medicate to numb painful memories, flashbacks, and hypervigilance.
Bipolar Disorder + Addiction
The mood swings of bipolar disorder can drive substance use—alcohol or drugs during manic phases, or attempts to escape depression during low periods.
Chronic Pain + Opioid Addiction
This is one of the most common pathways to opioid addiction. What begins as legitimate pain treatment can evolve into dependence.
The Self-Medication Trap
When underlying mental health conditions go untreated, substances become a coping mechanism—what clinicians call “self-medication.” The pattern looks like this:
- You experience psychological pain (depression, anxiety, trauma symptoms)
- You discover that alcohol or drugs temporarily relieve this pain
- You increasingly rely on substances to feel “normal”
- The substance use creates new problems (tolerance, withdrawal, life consequences)
- These new problems worsen your mental health
- You use more substances to cope with worsening mental health
- The cycle deepens
Breaking this cycle requires treating both conditions simultaneously. Treating addiction alone while ignoring depression rarely works. Treating depression alone while active addiction continues is equally ineffective. You need integrated care—exactly what we provide.
Vigeo’s Integrated Treatment Approach
Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation
Dr. Schneider conducts thorough assessments that examine not just your substance use, but your complete mental health history, trauma experiences, medical conditions, and life circumstances.
Simultaneous Treatment
We treat your addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions at the same time, using:
- MAT for substance use disorders
- Psychiatric medications for depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc.
- Ketamine therapy that treats both addiction and mental health conditions
- Coordination with trauma-focused therapy
- Holistic wellness approaches
Medication Management Expertise
Managing multiple psychiatric medications alongside addiction treatment medications requires specialized knowledge. Dr. Schneider has the expertise to navigate these complexities safely and effectively.
Long-Term Psychiatric Support
Mental health conditions are often chronic, just like addiction. We provide ongoing care as long as you need it, adjusting treatment as your needs evolve over months and years.
Why Integrated Care Gets Better Results
Research consistently shows that integrated treatment for co-occurring disorders:
- Improves outcomes for both addiction and mental health conditions
- Reduces relapse rates
- Improves quality of life and functioning
- Reduces hospitalization and crisis events
- Supports long-term recovery
When you treat both conditions together, each improves faster than when treated separately.
Ketamine’s Unique Advantage for Dual Diagnosis
One of the most exciting aspects of ketamine therapy is its ability to treat both addiction and common co-occurring mental health conditions simultaneously. A single ketamine treatment can:
- Reduce substance cravings
- Rapidly improve depression symptoms
- Decrease anxiety
- Help process traumatic memories (in KAP)
- Enhance overall therapy effectiveness
This makes ketamine particularly valuable for people with complex presentations—which is most people seeking addiction treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Addiction Treatment at Vigeo
How do I know which treatment is right for me?
During your initial consultation, we’ll discuss your unique situation and recommend the approach most likely to help you succeed. Factors we consider include type of substance, severity of addiction, previous treatment history, co-occurring conditions, personal preferences, and your treatment goals.
There’s no single “right” answer—the best treatment is the one that works for you.
Can I continue working during treatment?
Yes! Most of our treatments are designed for outpatients who continue with work and daily responsibilities. MAT allows you to function normally at work and home. Ketamine treatments require you to take the treatment day off (and have someone drive you), but you can usually resume normal activities the next day.
How long does treatment last?
This varies significantly by individual. MAT is often continued for many months or years—and that’s completely appropriate. Addiction is a chronic condition, and research shows long-term treatment is associated with better outcomes.
Ketamine therapy typically begins with 6 sessions over 2-3 weeks, followed by periodic booster treatments as needed (maybe monthly, maybe less often).
The bottom line: Treatment lasts as long as you need it to support your recovery.
What if I relapse?
Relapse is common in recovery and does not mean treatment has failed. If you use substances during treatment, please be honest with us so we can adjust your care plan and provide appropriate support.
We don’t judge—we’re here to help you get back on track. Relapse is often a learning opportunity that helps us refine your treatment approach.
Will I be on medication forever?
Not necessarily. Some people benefit from long-term MAT, while others eventually taper off medication once they’ve established solid recovery foundations. There’s no “right” timeline—we’ll work with you to determine what’s best for your situation.
What matters most is that you’re healthy, stable, and living the life you want. Whether that includes medication or not is a personal decision we’ll support.
Is ketamine therapy safe for people with addiction?
Yes, when administered in a controlled clinical setting by medical professionals. Research shows that therapeutic ketamine administered for addiction treatment does not lead to ketamine use disorder when it’s part of a comprehensive program.
We closely monitor all patients and screen for any signs of problematic use. Our team has extensive experience with ketamine safety protocols.
What about chronic pain?
If you’re concerned about managing pain during addiction treatment, we can discuss safe, non-addictive approaches during your consultation. Our psychiatric team will work with you to address both your recovery goals and any other health concerns you may have.
Can family members be involved?
Absolutely. Family support can be crucial for recovery. With your permission, we’re happy to include family members in discussions and can provide referrals to family therapy when appropriate.
Do I need to be detoxed before starting treatment?
This depends on the medication:
- Suboxone requires only mild withdrawal symptoms (12-24 hours after last opioid use)
- Vivitrol requires 7-14 days completely free of opioids
- Ketamine therapy has no opioid-free requirement
We’ll guide you through the appropriate process for your chosen treatment and coordinate medical detox support if needed.
What if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?
This requires special consideration and careful discussion. Buprenorphine (Suboxone without naloxone) is generally considered safer during pregnancy than continued opioid use or withdrawal. We’ll discuss all risks and benefits and coordinate closely with your OB/GYN.
Some treatments may not be appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, but we’ll work with you to find safe, effective options.
Take the First Step Toward Recovery Today
You’ve made it to the end of this guide, which means you’re seriously considering treatment. That alone takes courage.
Recovery from addiction is possible, and you deserve comprehensive, compassionate care. At Vigeo Wellness, we offer multiple evidence-based treatments because we know there’s no single solution that works for everyone.
